Nowhere is the historical legacy and personality of Scotland more impressively reflected than in its capital city, Edinburgh. Bordered by the Firth of Forth in the north and the intact scenery of the Pentland Hills in the south, Edinburgh rolls down to the magnificent east coast of Scotland. There, in the shadow of historical Edinburgh Castle, is where Dean Village, the small village that gave the Dean distillery its name, once lay. Today, the place has long been situated at the heart of Edinburgh. In 1881, James Johnstone built the distillery by the steep crags of the River Leith in the shade of Dean Bridge. And very soon after, the experienced distiller had put a great deal of loving care and skill into creating a first-class whisky that earned him great recognition.

Today, Dean's Finest Scotch Whisky is still produced in the Loch Lomond Distillery in Alexandria in the Scottish Highlands according to the original recipe, where the master distiller devotes the same loving care to its production as James Johnstone did over 100 years ago. The high-quality malts from the Scottish Highlands and the fine Loch Lomond Grain Whisky are harmoniously blended according to the recipe of the old Dean Distillery. The quality and flavour of Scotch whisky are greatly influenced by the selection of different malts and, in the case of Dean's, these are exclusively highland malts.

Yet more than anything, the grain whiskies in the blend define quality and character. A blind expert tasting, organised by Dr J. S. Swan of Tatlock & Thomson (the Scotch whisky industry’s leading independent analysts), culminated in the highest praise for Loch Lomond Grain Whisky. As Dr Swan put it: "It is everything a grain whisky should be, made in the traditional style of grain whisky—light and sweet with lovely hints of vanilla". Loch Lomond Grain Whisky is acknowledged to be one of the finest grain whiskies today.
Only after years of ageing in oak casks does Dean's Finest achieve the high standard of quality that is called Dean Distillery’s Finest Selection.
