The legend of The Tyrconnell was born in 1876, when Lord Ronald of Connemara, County Galway entered his chestnut colt, Tyrconnell, in the prestigious National Produce Stakes horse race. Fortune found favor with Lord Ronald that afternoon, as Tyrconnell bested horses and oddsmakers alike on his march to victory. The surprise victory captured the imagination of the assembled crowd, which included the Watts, a local family who had built a thriving whiskey distillery. They chose to commemorate the occasion by creating a limited edition, small batch whiskey that bore the name of their local champion.
Although the Watts intended to make The Tyrconnell just once, it ended up becoming their most popular whiskey. Before Prohibition, The Tyrconnell was claimed to be the best selling Irish whiskey. Today, the brand is maintained by the Kilbeggan Distilling Company, proud protectors of Irish whiskey making traditions. Each bottle bears the same commemorative label celebrating Tyrconnell’s triumph.
Tyrconnell is a double distilled Irish whiskey. While triple distilling creates whiskey that is mild, in doing so it also strips a spirit of more of its unique characteristics. Double distillation allows for more of The Tyrconnell’s rich and natural flavours to remain, creating a whiskey that carries a delicate flavour atop a creamier, more viscous presence.
The Tyrconnell is a remarkable single malt whiskey. Compared to its neighbours in Scotland, this Irish single malt is double distilled and also benefits from a milder climate, and therefore longer maturation time. The result is an approachable, rich, malty whiskey with a round finish. The Tyrconnell is free of smoky characteristics found in peated Scotch single malts.
