Powers

James Power founded the distillery at John's Lane near the Western Gate of Dublin City in the year 1791. The distillery was re-built in 1871 in classic Victorian style, occupying almost seven acres and employing about 300 people. John Powers & Son was in 1886 the first Irish distiller to bottle its own whiskey, adopting a gold label exclusively for Powers bottled at John's Lane. The Gold Label guaranteed the higher quality and distinguished it from the White label Powers bottles by independent whiskey bonders. Hence it became, & still is a custom in pubs to call for a 'Gold Label'. 1974 distillation moved to the new purpose build distillery at Midleton, Co Cork.
