Japanese Blended Malt Whisky, 43%vol

Malt whisky is distilled exclusively from barley malt, and is considered to be the forefather of all other types of whisky. In general, it is divided into single malt whisky (several malt whiskies from a single distillery vatted together) and pure malt whisky (malt whisky from several distilleries vatted together).

Taketsuru Pure Malt (non age) is a tribute to Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky and founder of Nikka. Taketsuru Pure Malt whisky is a blend of casks hailing from Nikka’s two distilleries in the north of Japan: Yoichi and Miyagikyo. To achieve this level of balance and complexity, Nikka’s master blenders rely on a large variety of whisky styles, combining the fresh and fruit notes of youthful whiskies with the rich, evolved character of older ones, aged for a large part in ex-sherry casks.

Released in 2014, this no-age statement Taketsuru bottling is a blend of malts aged 10 years on average in different types of oak casks. A high percentage of Miyagikyo malt gives a fresh fruity character, joined by mature aromas from an important sherry cask influence.

Colour:

Gold with pinkish hue

Nose:

Engaging. Fresh and fruity. Freshly pressed fruit juice comes to mind, a cornucopia of white fruit, peach notes and juicy grapes. It progressively opens up on fine amandine pastry notes, frangipane and biscuits. Italian all the way, like panetone with raisins. The malted barley grows more more present and plays off of the citrus aromas (clementine). A touch of oak and rusitc notes (verbena, camomille) bring it all together.

Taste:

Coffee, liqurice, toasted oak, coffee grounds, a cigar slowly burning out! Its surprising range is expressive to say the least. Vigorous, assertive and uncompromising. The peat is elusive and finds ways to assert itself without so much as a whisper.

Finish:

Licorice candy all the way. A refined bitterness quickly gives way to more integrated, medicinal aromas: camphor, eucalyptus. The finish eventually fades out on malted barley notes.
